I do understand that the virus spell is a way to provide an AOE to other attacking mobs by spreading the dot to other attackers. However, I have question on how to mechanically use it:
1. Do I cast virus and then the dot on one mob? 2. Do I cast virus on mobs other than the ones who are already dotted? 3. If the mob dies that has the virus, do I need to recast Virus?

The virus spell itself is a "viral" spell, there are others in this line as well, Contagion, Pandemic and Epidemic. It is not something you cast to make other DoTs viral, only the ones in this line are viral.
They work like this: Cast "viral" spell on mob, when it ticks, if there are other mobs nearby (pretty small range, but does not have to be right on top of them) the DoT will spread to that mob as well. The DoT on the new mob can now also spread to other mobs when it ticks.
Note: In order for it to spread, the mob must survive the tick. If it kills the mob, it will not spread.
Since they continue to spread, you dont need to recast it unless the last mob that is "infected" dies.
