Had a quick chat to Vinlar about this in game, time to put something down on paper.
It seems that the default graphic for non-standard Beastlord race pets is a wolf, kinda boring.
I have seen on another server that each race can be given a specific pet graphic, so I thought perhaps it's something we could implement here to give each Beastlord race its own flavour.
So, going by race, what should the pets look like?
Barbarian - Snow Wolf (Standard Race) Dwarf - Basilisk Halfling - Bee High Elf - Fae Drake Hatchling Wood Elf - Raven Dark Elf - Bat Iksar - Scaled Wolf (Standard Race) Ogre - Bear (Standard Race) Troll - Crocodile (Standard Race) Drakkin - Wyvern Erudite - Drake Froglok - Mosquito Gnome - Clockwork Spider Half Elf - Spider Human - Rat Vah Shir - Tiger (Standard Race)
Just ideas to get the ball rolling, some of them aren't a great match but my knowledge of mob graphics is hazy from about Dragons of Norrath onwards, a ton more humanoids later, not so many beasts. Please add in anything you think might be a suitable match. I want to try and keep them different so each race has something unique instead of everyone running around with wolves. It's entirely cosmetic, not asking for races to have unique attacks based on their pet.

For wood elf I think Treants are a good choice since they roam the forest For halflings I always imagined em with a firebeetle Raven could be better for DE I think

I dunno if I'd classify Treants as a beast though, they are a humanoid in a sense. It's like faeries, I don't really think they are suitable as pets either.
Technically Beastlords tame animals, and only animals. Hard choice.
Raven would suit Dark Elf for sure, but then who to give bats to? I think we need bats /nod

Sorry for the dumb question, but why are the BST pets different than on live (each race has its own animal), is that an EQemu thing or just a custmization idea specific to the server ?

Only certain races can be Beastlords. Due to the ability to change your race on the server, there are non-standard combinations being used. The races that don't have Beastlord as a standard class all use the same pet avatar, a wolf.

Barbarian - Snow Wolf (Standard Race)
Dwarf - Basilisk
Halfling - Yellowjacket or bixie High Elf - Arborean, Faeri, or Pixie Wood Elf - Giant Sylvan Bat or Black Wolf ; Treant is official live version Dark Elf - Nektulos Widow (black spider) or Raven Iksar - Scaled Wolf (Standard Race)
Ogre - Bear (Standard Race)
Troll - Crocodile (Standard Race)
Drakkin - Hollows Drake or Puma Erudite - Skunk, Kerra Lion, or Lord Gongo (Gorilla) Froglok - Mosquito or lizardman Gnome - Clockwork Spider
Half Elf - Gnoll or Willowisp Human - Rat
Vah Shir - Tiger (Standard Race)
My updated list, with changes made in bold. For each race, I tried to limit their choice of pet to some defining animal in their nearest newbie leveling zone to their home cities, as that is the creature that would be A) least resistant to being tamed (as animals are easier to tame than actual monsters) and B) most easy for them to learn, study, and capture (since near home city). Creatures are in order of preference (IE, I think the first option is more suitable than the second or third).
Reasons for the animal rule being broken in several cases: - For Halflings, yellowjackets fit the criteria, but bixie's are much more "iconic" to halflings than yellowjackets, imo. - For High Elf, the thought process was that they have such high intellect that they would have more skill and ability to tame much more difficult creatures. However, they limit themselves only to the "prime" specimen, hence why Faeri, Pixie, and Arborean are on the list and orc is not. (I think the Faeri's and Pixie's would honestly be too difficult to tame simply due to their own trickery and magic, and they would likely be harder to capture because they would call upon each other and create strong defenses) - For Drakkin, as much as I really really would love a Wyvern pet (Drakkin is my favorite race, even though I feel like they could have done a MUCH better job), Wyvern's don't fit the lore. (You'd think that Wyverns would be part of the lore, but I remember there being a distinction between Wyverns and the rest of the dragon types. Also of note is that the Drakkins were created by 6 dragons that essentially left the Nest and the Scale because their ideas were too radical. Also notice that Wyverns do not exist anywhere in TSS) Drakes fit the lore much, much better, and I believe the fact that Drakkins are humans touched by Dragons, there would be some sort of "bond" between Drakkins and specific factions of drake. - For Frogloks, Mosquito honestly would probably fit well enough, I just thought they were rather boring. I wish I could give a good reason for lizardman, other than "Well, there are a lot of lizardmen in the Rathe Mountains". - For Half Elf, there were no interesting animals to choose. I also believe that because they are half elf, they would have some of the intelligence of High Elfs, although perhaps only 1/3 or 1/4 - since there is also Wood Elf, Dark Elf, and Human in their blood. Therefore, they could plausibly train Gnolls. Willowisp are listed as an option also just for funsies.

Call me crazy but honestly I've always felt the "default" black wolf fit well for dark elves... As I agree with the starting areas mobs being used as the real bst races seem to follow that.. There are a LOT of black wolves in Nek Forest, and if the other non default races had their wolves "changed" it would actually be unique.. and just for the record.. I HATE the bat idea... I feel a bat would be more suited to a Necro or SK

You think a living animal would be more suited to practitioners of death, and their skeletons and spectres are not suitable?
I mean, I can see the relation but they are animals, or beasts, which is what Beastlords are supposed to be the lords of, hence the name Beast-lord.
As for the wolves, I won't disagree. I just find those particular avatars quite boring, especially given Barbarians have a very similar one, and Shamans have a ghostly one. I think the wolf graphic is severely overused and would like to see something more unique.

I suppose the associated comes from vampires turning into bats bloodsucking.. lifedraining.. lifetap....
