There have been numerous changes to the Paladin specific ability "Lay on Hands" since EQ's original release in mid 1999. As of the writing of this guide for Zephyr's "Imperium" EQ server. December 2014, when using the preferred latest EQ Emu compatible client (RoF) and other common late-development clients (SoF and UF for example), the ability is not granted on character creation, as it was in previous clients and on those servers specializing in legacy (Pre-PoP) content; such as the famous "1999" project servers and their "hardcore original EQ" variants.
Your Paladin first trains in "LoH" beginning at level 5, and is accessible anywhere in the world by typing "V" to bring up the AA Window. Select the Class Tab, and click on the first available rank of Lay on Hands. A hotkey button will then "float" on your cursor, allowing you to drop the new button into any free "hotbar" bank. As you level, remember to open your AA window periodically and check when to again train in the next latest and newest ranks of Lay on Hands.
...
I strongly suggest that you place your LoH hotkey on a bank that is mapped to secondary functions or to one which requires thoughtful mouse clicking, if your hotbars are unbound to any combination of keystrokes. (This sounds more confusing than it is, at first.) All this is because the LoH spell (AA ability now, technically) has a very long "cool down" or "re-use" timer associated with it (1:12 to begin with, which is 72 minutes real time), and that it cannot be easily macro'd for emulator users as it can be on official servers.
Here are some useful links about the present day "live" version of Lay on Hands:

...
The most important thing to remember about LoH is that it is a TARGETED SPELL (NOT SELF-ONLY); this means that whatever or whoever you have targeted at the time you press or click your LoH hotkey WILL trigger the spell's cooldown/reuse timer and consume the effect, even if it is on players of a different alliance (PvP) or an NPC you may have targeted (which cannot be healed by you, lol, which was possible- way back when).
If you are not used to the tab-target healing method common to solo-playing with healing classes, you can still perform an acceptably fast LoH by hitting your F1 function key (ONCE, for your character; Twice for any combat pet you may have; a third time for yourself again, if you hit it twice accidentally! lol), and typing the hotkey bank button combo you have mapped, or just by mouse clicking the correct button.
EQ Emu users please Note that the Macro "/alt activate 6001" found in many EQ1 Paladin guides WILL NOT WORK at this time.
Happy, uh- "Paladinning!" or "Pwnadinzor" or whatever...
Additions, Comments, Corrections, and Improvements welcome and appreciated.
Thanks
(IWIN button sold separately. Some assembly required. Gnomish batteries not included. EverQuest is a registered trademark; blah blah blahblahblah.)
