Once upon a time, in another life it seems, some old friends and I took a break from this game we loved, to create our own story. We didn't leave EverQuest though. We stepped into it...
Once or twice a week we'd all gather in-game, not as our powerful mains with the fantastic (at the time) gear and stats or new alts we hoped to fast track through so we could raid as a new class, but as these unknowns, these characters we gave real stories to. Characters that we....became. Yes, kinda just like in Dungeons & Dragons. Sort of.
I recently came across a lost file on an old dusty external hard drive hidden in a beat up box in the back of the darkest corner of a closet I use for storage in a part of my house I seldom have reason to go into (a bit exaggerated but you get the idea. It had been forgotten) and I began to remember what this game we all play here had once really meant to me and why I still play it to this day. The adventures, the comradery, the stories we tell and the memories we make.
So now, in honor of the ghosts of players no longer playing, old friendships crafted during long nights of raiding and grouping and all new gamers alike, I propose a new story. A sort of...continuation of something started over a decade ago by other people I tolerated
The rules are simple.
Simply agree that you will try to be on this toon with those of us creating our story once a week. Saturday evenings for now unless another day (or two) works better.
(Try to avoid playing the character solo outside of the alloted time to prevent pre-mature deaths or advancing past everyone else unless it really fits with the ongoing story)
Create a hardcore character of a race/class of your own choosing. These characters are hardcore because it will put certain role-play limitations on us and the fear of perma-death makes the story more immersive.
You'll want to make HC toon on a completely separate account because it flags that whole account as hardcore.
Try to give them a "real" character name. i,e;no naming a necro "Coffinstuffer" or something and definitely no Vah Shir named "Fluffy McPurrsalot" because I might possibly have to hunt you down.
Come up with a backstory that drives you for the race/class combo you chose. Maybe you are an ogre that was raised by kindly Erudites and after being healed of the Gods-curse, you find enlightenment and became a paladin. Or a Vah Shir that hates all things furry so you fled Shar Vahl and took up necromancy so that you could use magic to shave all other living creatures.
During play, try to avoid the use of /ooc and the common-tongue and when speaking, use only your racial languages. We will eventually understand each other anyhow and there ARE other ways to "communicate"
The Story
I will be typing up the main story as it happened after we finish each session just for semblance of continuity. But please feel free to send me a message with your own perspective to be added in (and maybe embellished) and if your version is better than mine, I will gladly use yours instead. Only reason I'd like to do it this way is to prevent the story from looking like some RP chat room none-sense where everyone's story is more important than everyone else. Hopefully this makes sense? I also don't see a reason you couldn't post your own tale in the story section once it's been added to the forum.
Also, to add to the illusion, I'm making a guild for these story toons with an alt that will not be part of the story itself so please log your story character in and see Wednesday for an invite Friday evenings between 8 - 8:30pm EST. Or send me a /pm here, in game or on discord and I'll log Wednesday in to invite the character whenever....I'll just know who you are then.
I also will not be disclosing the names of who any person really is. It might be a bit more fun to not know the portly halfling with the jumjum addiction is actually Skarr, that Grease is also playing the scandalous High-elf maiden bent on world domination or that I'm the gnome bard constantly trying to get piggy-back rides from passing lady ogres. (I'm NOT going to be playing a gnome bard but again, the point is made)
Any questions or comments? Hopefully this gets a few people involved.
