Client updated to v2.0! Huge shout-out to synwulfe for rebooting the client! Thank you! New client stability, and I've added the same Imperium flare! Posting his adventure below: So, like a lot of folks, when I started on Imperium, I was plagued with crashes. They were so bad that I nearly quit Imperium until I started looking into the causes, which prompted the crash reduction guide I wrote. While it helped tremendously, it did not fix the client completely. I went from crashing 3-4 times per session to 3-4 times per week, with the most common crashes in upper TSS zones while zoning into them. I continue to see posts and comments in game about crashes despite steps taken in the crash reduction guide, so I went back to work. I didn't do anything too fancy... I took the official Rain of Fear client from Steam and patched that up to the May 10th, 2013 patch from EQ Live, the same procedure the EQEmu devs had performed when the core was updated to the RoF2 client. I then took that client and dug very deep into some file repositories and patched my client, one at a time by release date, up to the most updated EQ Live patch possible which is still compatible with EQEmu. Using my EQ computer which is an i7-8700, RTX 2060 and 32GB of DDR4 at 3200Mhz running Windows 10 with DX12, the results are as follows... - No 4GB patch applied to the executable
- dgVoodoo is no longer needed
- No additional modifications performed for DX9 support
- No ini's required modification
- No models were turned off or turned down
- The build has been tested on a full time bases using Graecus and Synwulfe since 1/20/23
- Memory load reduced by 40%, from 1.4GB to an average of 850MB and a high end of 950MB
- CPU load down, on average, 15% at 3.3Ghz
- GPU thermals down 4 degrees Celsius on average
- Results will vary based on your own hardware
- DX9 dll files from the crash reduction guide still recommended, DX12 does not support DX9 programs and EQ is a DX9 program
- Enabling all cores will still be required based on my own system configuration. To keep my testing clean, I did not modify my ini to have it manage my CPU's for me
In 2 months and four days as of this writing, I've had one toon crash once... It was overnight so I wasn't monitoring it so I couldn't research why. I raid daily, I've been zipping all over the server doing shawl quests for my necro and I've helped people get raid flagged out in the TSS zones, no crashes.
This is not without it's own negatives...
- I included a few UI's I've seen folks using but I have not set any up with this build.
- I tried to use the Defiance UI and it crashed the client
- Agro meter is not functioning
- The stats window, item info window and such, aren't properly spaced to display three digit heroic stats, they bleed over
As you can see, the issues noted all deal with the UI. This is most likely because I've patched the client beyond the version these included UI's were updated to. So, like EQ live, UI's or parts of a UI are broken until updated to the next patch level. I'm more of a default UI player so I've not even messed with updating them. All issues noted are fixable by editing the UI's xml files.
Your mileage may vary, I stabilized the client for my computer and the odds that you are running a duplicate of my own system is remote at best. Troubleshooting... - Moving at the speed of light? Throttle back the speed of your CPU (google it)
- Each toon should be running its own instance of the executable for stability. Each toon has it's own EQ folder
- C++ Run Time Error "abnormal termination" crash means you didn't add DX9 support to your DX12 computer, see the crash reduction guide about the DX9 dll files
- Second window frame stutters, options->display->advanced->Max. Background FPS slider to unlimited
I threw in the 4GB patcher as I don't know if you'll need it.

When upgrading to the new client. Just do a search in the old client you have for your Account name and Character names. Copy any of those files into the new client (ensuring they are being dropped in the correct folders) to preserve your settings and GUI layouts!
